5 Smart Ways to Save Energy as Temperatures Rise
South Carolina summers bring the heat, and often, higher energy usage and bills along with it. While we can’t change the weather, we can provide you with some tips to help you stay comfortable during the warmest days of summer and use energy more efficiently.
At Central Electric Power Cooperative, we’re committed to helping our member cooperatives keep costs low while supporting a stronger energy grid and a more sustainable future. That starts with smart steps you can take at home. Here are five practical ways to save energy even when temperatures soar this summer.
- Choose energy-efficient products
Swapping out traditional light bulbs for LEDs is an easy, affordable first step. LEDs use less energy and last much longer, saving you money over time. For an even greater impact, consider looking for Energy Star-labeled products, like thermostats, washing machines, and refrigerators. These certified products will reduce energy use beyond the summertime and can be a cost-saving investment.
- Program your thermostat thoughtfully
Even as temperatures are rising, it is important to be aware of your thermostat settings. During the summer, the US Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78 ℉ when you’re at home and increasing the temperature when you’re away. A programmable thermostat can automatically adjust settings based on your schedule, helping you stay cool and efficient without having to think about it.
- Utilize fans and other ventilation systems
Ceiling fans circulate the air and can help you feel cooler inside without having to lower the temperature on your thermostat. This means your air conditioning doesn’t have to work as hard, saving energy and reducing costs. Fans cool people, not spaces, so remember to turn off fans when you leave the room.
- Keep blinds and shades closed as much as possible
Whether home or away, it is important to keep shades and blinds closed, especially during the hottest parts of the day. This blocks the sunlight, naturally preventing excess heat from entering your home and helping keep indoor temperatures low. It’s a simple habit that can lead to noticeable savings on your energy bill.
- Seal air leaks and improve insulation
Cool air can easily escape through small gaps around windows, doors, and ductwork, making your air conditioning work overtime. Though it involves some investigating, it could lead to lots of savings. Sealing air leaks with weatherstripping or caulk helps keep cool air in and hot air out. You may also need additional insulation in attics and crawl spaces. Most of the time, these upgrades are DIY-friendly and can make a big difference in both comfort and energy savings.
Implementing these five practical, energy-smart solutions can lead to better habits and lower energy bills. It could be as simple as turning off lights when you leave a room or being more mindful when running major appliances. Small changes add up and will reduce your energy usage, even during these hot, humid South Carolina days.
